The Murmansk region is one of the most highly urbanized regions of the Russian Federation (the share of the rural population as of 01.01.2023 according to official statistics was 7.0% (45.8 thousand people). Agriculture, due to the peculiarities of the geographical location and natural climatic conditions of the Murmansk region, is not sufficiently developed in comparison with the regions of the middle belt and the south of Russia.
Agro-industrial complex is not a key economic sector of the Murmansk region, the share of agricultural products is about 0.2% of the total gross regional product. Most of the agricultural products produced in the region account for agricultural organizations (61.7%), the share of households of the population – 34.8%, farms, including individual entrepreneurs, – 3.5%.
The enterprises of agriculture, food and processing industry produce and provide the population with fresh food, and also have a significant impact on restraining the price level in the regional food market.
The main branch of the agro-industrial complex of the region is animal husbandry, priority areas are dairy cattle breeding and domestic reindeer husbandry.
In the current state, the crop production industry of the Murmansk region is aimed at meeting the needs of dairy farming in succulent and coarse feeds. Forage crops occupy 90% of the acreage. The cultivation of potatoes and vegetables is almost completely (99% of the gross harvest) concentrated in the personal subsidiary farms of the population.

The food and processing industry of the Murmansk region is represented by enterprises of the following industries: bakery, dairy processing, meat processing. The region also produces soft drinks, beer, sauces, condiments (mayonnaise, mustard) and processes wild raw materials.
The production of bread and bakery products in recent years is about 18-20 thousand tons.
Milk – about 5-8 thousand tons, fermented milk products – 5-7 thousand tons.
About 4-5 thousand tons of sausage products are produced annually in the region.
The annual production volume of soft drinks is 8-10 thousand half liters.
Almost all products of the food and processing industry produced in the Murmansk region (with the exception of fish products) are sold on the domestic regional market, which indicates its availability and demand among the population.
