On March 16, the 3rd international conference “Fishery in the Arctic: modern challenges, international practices and prospects” was launched in Murmansk being officially supported by the Government of the Murmansk region and the Federal Agency for Fishery. During the conference all those involved in the fishing industry are to exchange views on burning issues of the industry, its challenges and prospects. At the plenary session of the conference participants discussed regions’ authorities and state regulation of the fishery and fish processing. Opening the conference Governor Marina Kovtun underscored that fishing industry requires balanced state control and stimulation. The sea resources shall be exploited in an ecological way. “There is one more goal – rights of local population residing in coastal areas shall be taken into consideration and secured. Fishing in the North is a prerogative right of local people, first and foremost aboriginal dwellers. We absolutely need to consider this matter framing regulative norms for fishery,” highlighted Marina Kovtun.
