Currently alpine skiing infrastructure of the region is primarily aimed for tourists though the region has potential to become training base for alpine ski racers and to host world-class alpine ski competitions. The Russian alpine ski federation has announced an initiative to create in the Murmansk region a complex of tracks and trails covered with artificial snow. This proposal has been discussed during the working meeting between acting Governor of the Murmansk region Andrey Chibis with the Russian alpine ski federation president Leonid Melnikov and vice president Valery Tsyganov.
The head of the region has supported the idea noting that attracting professional athletes to the Murmansk region will also contribute to the economic development of the area.
