On the eve of the Miner's Day and 90th Anniversary of the «Apatit» Ice Palace of sports is opened in Kirovsk.
The Ice arena will be used in three modes: training and mass skating, competitions, as well as exhibitions and concerts. In the mode of sports events the stands will be able to accommodate 260 people, during concerts and exhibitions – 750 people. The facility is equipped with a special covering that allows hosting events without melting ice. The Apatit arena will be a training center for children involved in hockey and figure skating. Departments of these kinds of sports are planned to be opened on the basis of the Gornyak sports center. Amateur hockey teams will also train here.
There are an ice field with an area of 1800 square meters, gym, hall for choreography, buffet and skate rental area inside the Apatit arena. There are rooms for medical personnel, check- rooms, technical and household premises, premises for ice-harvesting machines and refrigeration equipment. The total area is about 6200 square meters.
The head of the Murmansk region Andrey Chibis noted that the construction of the Ice arena was strictly controlled by the regional authorities, so that its opening took place by the professional holiday – Miner's Day.
On the opening day the new Ice arena hosted a Cup match of the famous hockey player Sergey Fedorov – two-time Olympic medalist, three-time world champion, three-time Stanley Cup winner. The legendary athlete spent his young years in Apatity, studied at school № 3 and began his hockey career in the local team Apatitstroy. The Cup of his name will be held regularly.
