The results of the VIII International Scientific and Practical Conference "The Universe of the Polar Bear: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic" were discussed during the session "The Arctic: Bridges of cooperation between peoples and States" at the International Arctic Forum, which is being held in Murmansk on March 26-27. The IAF is organized by the Roscongress Foundation with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation.

The VIII International Scientific and Practical Conference "The Universe of the Polar Bear: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic" was held on March 18-21 at venues in Moscow, Anadyr and St. Petersburg. The conference is organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The program of the meeting included 30 sessions with the participation of representatives of federal and regional authorities, business and science. During the event, experts presented more than 250 reports and discussed issues related to the protection of Arctic fauna, international cooperation and sustainable development of the region.

"The agenda of the conference, including its international aspect, was very extensive. We agreed to prepare a roadmap and work out the provisions that will be "sewn into it" during the year. Many regions, in particular Chukotka, have prepared amendments to federal laws, by-laws and government resolutions. At the conference, we defended the issues not only of Chukotka alone, but the problems of all regions of the Arctic zone," said Alexander Savchenko, Deputy Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Among the key initiatives of the conference, the Deputy Governor of the region noted the research of the Chukchi-Alaska polar bear and marine mammal populations in the Chukchi and Bering Seas, international cooperation between zoos and oceanariums, the development of a joint agreement with China to protect the East Siberian (Yakut) sturgeon, proposals for the ecological extraction of rare earth metals in the Arctic and technologies for adaptation to climate change in the region.

One of the main goals of the conference "The Universe of the Polar Bear: effective cooperation in the Arctic" is to find a balance between the active development of the Arctic region and the preservation of the vulnerable nature of the North and the cultural traditions of indigenous peoples. As a result, in particular, it was decided to create an international expert platform to maintain a regular dialogue between representatives of government authorities, business, science and society on scientific, technological and environmental development of the Arctic.

At the session "The Arctic: bridges of cooperation between peoples and States", experts also discussed the main aspects of international cooperation in the development of the Arctic, including the importance of the Northern Sea Route as a global logistics route, investments in the Far North, tourism projects and joint initiatives with non-Arctic states.

The VI International Arctic Forum "The Arctic – the territory of dialogue" is held under the motto "Live in the North!". The event is a key platform for discussing topical issues of socio-economic development of the Arctic territories, developing multi-level multilateral mechanisms for joint disclosure and effective development of the powerful resource potential of the Arctic region.
